The identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoins, is one of the biggest mysteries of the cryptocurrency world. There have been several speculations made in the past as to who he possibly could be. The idea that the FBI or the CIA might be aware of his identity has also been floating around for quite a while now. However, the latest crowdfunding campaign, #FindSatoshi, is another attempt at discovering the identity of the mysterious Mr. Nakamoto.

German Neff of Estonia is the founder of this campaign. The #FindSatoshi campaign aims at raising almost $250,000 to hire the best private detectives from all over the world to help identify who Satoshi Nakamoto is. Detectives from New York, London, Japan and Russia are being considered to be hired for this project once the funds are raised.

As per Neff, the fact that Bitcoin had touched almost $20,000 last year was an alarming fact. Cryptocurrencies are no longer some geek-fantasy but have real world implications now. Considering that Nakamoto owns a significant chunk of Bitcoins – it could have serious implications if he (or his heirs) begin to sell off their holdings. This could lead to the global cryptocurrency markets collapsing any time.

As cryptocurrencies become mainstream and as governments around the world start to regulate them, more questions now need to be asked about the man who started it all. More importantly, why did he create cryptocurrencies. Was it due to his passion for science or was it due to some selfish motives? Could he be working for an international IT giant?

“The world needs to be sure that the cryptocurrency is not a global fraud. We, the fans of cryptocurrencies who sincerely believe in the ideals behind the digital money, should know who has more than 1 million coins in their wallet. And who could overthrow the market overnight, almost destroying it. At least one confirmed fact would be enough. There’s just too much risk for a new economic paradigm.”

The campaign, which is being held on the Russian website Boomstarter, has already managed to raise $55,000 so far. Boomstarter offers international crowdfunding claiming to be making use of the blockchain technology.
